Personal Review: This was another bottle that my friend from JMU had me try while I visited this past weekend. He said he got this bottle of wine for his 21st birthday from his sister who I know very well and know that she has good taste in wine as well. When I first smelled the wine, I immediately smelled how sweet it was and I got an overwhelming sense of peach (obviously LOL). When I first tasted the wine, it was a little bubbly, definitely tasted like peach, and there was another flavor that I could not describe except for that it was also a citrus fruit. I narrowed it down to lemon and my friend said I was right. I really enjoyed this bottle of wine and I might have to get my own soon.

Personal Review: This bottle of wine belongs to my friend at JMU that I just visited this weekend and he had me try a variety of different wines from the winery he worked at for years. This bottle of wine had some aromas of floralness and a little fruity. When I first tasted this wine, I tasted hints of mango and some other citrus fruit that I could describe as orange. It was definitely very sweet to me, and I enjoyed it very much.

Critic Review: "An opulent Cabernet Sauvignon from California, the Bonanza Lot 4 provides a mouthful of happiness at every sip. Aromas of berry jam, dark cherry, dried herbs, black pepper, leather, mocha, and oak. Full body, with silky tannins and soft acidity, the wine exposes a dense and delicious finish of strawberry jam, dark cherry, violet, graphite, cocoa, spices, vanilla and oak. Enjoy!" - Christian Marcoux

Personal Review: This was a bottle that my roommate had bought for himself that he had me try as well. When I first smelled the wine, I smelled hints of dark cherry, possibly blackberry, as well as hints of spice to it. When I first tasted this wine, it started out a little bit bitter which is not what I typically enjoy, but it finished off much sweeter than is started. It still tasted like cherry and it had a bit of spice to it that is harder to describe. I would probably drink this wine again.

Wine Dinner Report #2

Wine Dinner Report #2:

Tonight I made dinner by myself because none of my friends or roommates were available to do this activity with, but it's okay because it meant more food for me LOL. Plus I didn't want to go out to a restaurant and spend a lot of money tonight, so cooking at home seemed like the logical choice. My main dish was salmon and I had two side dishes accompanying it: a Santa Fe salad, and sour cream/chives mashed potatoes.

The main dish was salmon which I put a few different seasonings to give a little bit of a kick. I started with black pepper, put a good amount of cajun seasoning, and a little sprinkle of thyme because why not. I baked both filets of salmon at 450 for roughly about 13 minutes or so to make it a little extra crispy. The first side dish that I had was a Santa Fe salad which consisted of the following: lettuce, cheese, roasted corn, tortilla chips, and a chipotle sauce to finish it off. The second side dish was sour cream and chive mashed potatoes. I was more excited about this food than from my previous wine dinner report because I was not in as much of a rush to get stuff done.

I looked up which types of wine would go well with salmon and I read that Pinot Grigios, Roses, and sweet Rieslings were the way to go. So, I went to Kroger and got one of each wine that I read about online. These honestly looked pretty good just from my initial look at each of them. Today I also did not use a wine glass, but a glass for liquor LOL because it was the only thing clean at the time.

The 2021 Prophecy Rose Vin de France wine was very appealing to me when I saw it at the store because I am a big fan of Roses and this one was a new one I haven't tried before. I was expecting this wine to pair fairly well with the dinner I made tonight, but I am still learning about which foods balance well with different types of wine. When I first smelled the wine, it smelled very sweet as well as fruity, almost like a combination of pineapple and orange. When I first tasted the wine, it was definitely drier than I would have thought, but it was still an enjoyable dryness. I got hints of orange and surprisingly a little bit of watermelon, but no pineapple taste. With the salad, the dryness of the Rose actually pairs well with the spiciness of the salad; also, the hints of sweetness from the Rose complemented the spice of the salad as well. The mashed potatoes and this wine did not go very well together at all; I thought the creaminess of the mashed potatoes clashed with the dryness of the wine which made the sweet taste of the Rose cease to exist. The salmon actually complimented the Rose very well; again, the sweet and spicy combo was actually very well balanced which is something I really enjoy.

The 2021 Pacific Rim Sweet Riesling from Columbia Valley, Washington also seemed appealing to me because for one it was on sale for $11.99 when it's usually $15.99, and I also have never had a sweet Riesling before so it seemed very interesting. Since I had never had this type of wine before, I had no idea how well it would pair with the dinner I had prepared even though online it said it should go well with the dishes. The aromas that I got from this wine were very sweet as well as very fruity; I smelled both peach and pineapple which were both very enjoyable. When I first tasted this wine, it was definitely not dry whatsoever and very sweet. I definitely tasted the peach flavor but not the pineapple that I initially smelled. It honestly was not overwhelmingly sweet but if it had been any sweeter, I would not have enjoyed the wine. It was also a little bit acidic. With the salad, the spiciness really complemented the sweetness of the wine; neither side was overpowering which gave it a good balance. Honestly, the mashed potatoes and this wine paired weirdly well together which was strange because the sweet Rose that I talked about did not pair well with it at all. The creaminess and the sweetness weirdly complemented each other (maybe I am just weird). With the salmon, it also paired well because of its spiciness and the sweetness of the wine. This wine actually paired well with all three parts of this dinner.

The 1908 Cielo Pinot Grigio from the Veneto region in Italy seemed interesting because I really haven't tried that many Pinot Grigios yet, so I was excited to try this one. Since I had never had this type of wine before, I had no idea how well it would pair with the dinner I had prepared even though online it said it should go well with the dishes. This wine had a very light smell to it when I tried to get a sense of what it smelled like; I actually had to sit there for a couple of minutes and really think about what I was smelling because it wasn't like any other wine I had smelled before. It did smell a little bit sweet, a little floral, and almost smelled like honey to me. When I tasted this wine, it was definitely more full-bodied than the other two wines and was pretty dry. I got a very subtle taste of sweetness before it transitioned to an overwhelming sense of bitterness which I do not like at all. Due to my dislike of bitter things, I do not think it paired well with any part of the dinner that I made tonight. It just was not appetizing and it honestly made me a bit nauseous at the end of it, so I will definitely not be trying this specific wine again.

Overall, I was actually pretty impressed with how 2 of the 3 wines paired very well with the dinner I made tonight. I will be sure not to get the same Pinot Grigio the next time because it was just gross. But I would say this was a lot more successful than the first wine dinner report.

A fun, fresh, delicious dessert wine for sweet wine lovers. Not overly sweet." https://www.discountvino.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=142

Personal Review: One of my friends bought this wine for himself but thought of me and told me to try it with him so I saved some money this week LOL. When I first smelled the wine, it was overwhelmingly sweet to me which is weird because I like smelling sweet aromas. I got pretty big hints of cherry and strawberry which piqued my interest. However, when I tasted the wine, it actually tasted too sweet for me. I definitely tasted the cherry flavor but didn't taste as much when it came to the strawberry flavor. It also was a bit bubbly which I am not a huge fan of, so overall I did not really like the taste of the wine, or the smell to be honest.

The wine has the sweet black cherry and dark berry fruit character that distinguishes California's finest Cabernet Sauvignons, and its ripe fruit is supported by velvety tannins and well-integrated oak. This is a wine of excellent depth, richness, and length on the palate." https://bestbuyliquors.com/robert-mondavi-winery-private-selection-cabernet-sauvignon

Personal Review: This was another bottle that I bought from Kroger when I came back from spring break. When I first smelled the wine, it was also very fruity; the aromas that I got right off the bat were a darker type of cherry and blueberry. When I first tasted the wine, it tasted very rich and not that sweet to my surprise again. This was not that bitter, but I definitely tasted the darker cherry and blueberry flavors, even with a very small hint of vanilla. This is a wine that I think I would try again because I did like it, but it was not my favorite thing.

When I first smelled the wine, it definitely smelled fruity, like a mixture of apples and almost a hint of pineapple, and was also floral to me. When I first tasted the wine, it was very dry as well as very full-bodied. It honestly was not as fruity as I thought it was going to be, but I still tasted the apple flavors. I also thought it was a pretty bitter wine too which is not something I typically like, especially with alcohol. I do not think that I would get this same wine again unless there was some food that I like that would pair nicely with it, otherwise I probably will not get this wine a second time.

The wine juice was fermented in stainless steel tanks and aged up to eight months in French oak barrels. Personal Review: This was also another bottle of wine that my grandfather got for my family when he visited in early January, and this was also very exciting since I really have not had that much Italian wine before. When I first smelled the wine, it smelled like straight-up chocolate which was pretty weird to me since I could not smell anything else besides that; it was a very overpowering smell. When I first tasted the wine, it was also very full-bodied and a little bit dry. I tasted some fruity aspects of the wine like cherry that I couldn't smell before, but it also tasted exactly as it smelled, like chocolate. This was another favorite in my opinion because I love fruit and chocolate mixed together.

Personal Review: This was one of the bottles of wine that my grandfather brought for my family when he visited in early January and he definitely knows his way around wine so I was very excited to try it. When I first smelled it, the wine smelled like dark cherries with very, and I mean very, small hints of chocolate which really piqued my interest because I really enjoy both of those aromas separately and together. When I first tasted it, the wine was definitely more full-bodied than other wines that I have previously tried. It also tasted a little bit oaky, most likely because it was stored in barrels of some sort. Overall, I really enjoyed this wine and I would definitely have it again, especially with some food next time.

A balanced, velvety texture and supple tannins carry the wine through to a lingering, succulent finish." https://handywineguide.com/meiomi-pinot-noir-review/

Personal Review: Initially when I saw this wine I did not know what to think of it; my roommate had this wine and had me try it and he definitely hyped it up a lot. When I first smelled it, the wine smelled almost overwhelmingly sweet with hints of dark cherry mixed in. It just smelled fruity overall. When I first tasted it, the wine was definitely as sweet as it smelled, but also was a little dry which I could not tell just based on the initial aromas. I actually thought the dryness of the wine balanced its sweetness of it; it was still a bit sweet for my liking, but it was still good nonetheless. I don't think this wine deserved all the hype, but I would still have it again.

Wine Dinner Report

Wine Dinner Report:

Tonight I made dinner with my roommate Jake at my apartment because I was in the mood to cook something instead of going out to a restaurant (it was quite a late dinner but dinner nonetheless). We were feeling Italian tonight so I made a main dish and had two side dishes accompanying it.

Our main dish was medium pasta shells with a basil alfredo sauce. The two side dishes are oven-baked croissants and a hand-tossed Caesar salad with lettuce, cheese, Caesar dressing, and crushed croutons. Honestly, it looked pretty good to me and my roommate seemed to enjoy it just as much as I did so I was content.

I saw these wines at Kroger and thought that they would pair well with the dinner I had planned for tonight. Funny enough, I was using a mason jar to taste and smell the wine since the only wine glass we have was being used by my roommate LOL. I still got a good experience with the mason jar I used.

The 1917 Stella Rosa Tropical Mango wine was very appealing when I saw it in the store because I have had a pineapple-flavored wine from the same brand. I was not sure how it would pair with tonight's dinner but I decided to take the risk and buy it anyway. It has a very strong mango aroma, and overall just smelled very sweet, plain and simple. It tasted exactly like it smelled which has not always been the case for some wines I have tried in the past. It had a very strong mango and fruity taste, and it was almost too sweet for my liking, but I enjoyed it regardless. With the pasta, it actually tasted really good to my surprise. It really was not overpowering in the sense of the mango/super sweet flavor; they really balanced well, especially due to the creaminess of the alfredo sauce. I did not really enjoy the wine with the salad or the croissants though; it did not taste right to me.

The Bay Bridge Pinot Grigio Colombard wine was not as appealing as the Stella Rosa, but was on sale at Kroger and was super cheap; it does not have a vintage. I was not entirely sure how it would pair with the dinner I had planned for tonight, but since I am still learning about wine pairings with food, I decided to take the risk with something I am completely unfamiliar with. Its smell was weird at first because I could not make out any specific aroma, but after doing a little research, I concluded that it smelled a little fruity, floral, and a little bit dry. The taste was also a little bit of a mystery at first except I could immediately tell it was super dry; after some more research, I concluded that it also tasted like peach a little bit and was floral, but that was as far as I could get. With the pasta, it was not what I expected but it paired with it okay. I just thought it was too dry with the pasta's creaminess. Maybe I should try a different sauce next time, but it was just weird. I liked it with the salad pretty well, but not so much with the croissants.

The Bay Bridge White Zinfandel wine was also not as appealing as the Stella Rose, but was on sale at Kroger and was super cheap; it does not have a vintage. I was also not entirely sure how it would pair with the dinner I had planned for tonight, but since I am still learning about wine pairings with food, I decided to take the risk again with something I am completely unfamiliar with. The aromas of this wine were fruity, floral, had hints of peach, and apples as well; also had hints of dryness. The taste was super sweet at first and then immediately the dryness came and overpowered the sweetness. With the pasta, I actually enjoyed it since the creaminess of the alfredo sauce matched really well with the sweetness of this specific wine. The dryness was not great with the pasta, but overall was good. I did not enjoy it with the salad but surprisingly did with the croissants for some reason (I'm just weird I guess).

Overall, I was not a huge fan of the wine-dinner pairing, but that is also because I chose dishes and wines that didn't really pair with each other. I am excited to do this again later in the semester, maybe at an Italian restaurant next time LOL. It was nice to cook something that I enjoy though and now I know if I like or dislike these wines now.

Wine and Cheese Pairing #1

Wine and Cheese Pairing #1

Let me make this perfectly clear, I really enjoy eating cheese, especially the more expensive kinds when I get the chance to do so. However, I bought three types of cheeses that I thought would taste good by themselves without thinking too much about how they would taste with the wines (my first mistake). I originally was going to do this by myself but ended up doing this wine and cheese pairing with my roommate William and my friend Jose. They were intrigued by this activity and decided last minute to join me which I didn't have a problem with because I rather hang out with people doing this type of thing than do it by myself.

Ok, so I got the three different wines and three different types of cheese from Kroger although I want to try Vintage Cellar next time. The first wine on the left is called Bay Bridge Red Blend which does not even have a vintage on it because it cost me 2.99 (what a steal), but I did not expect this to taste very good because of that. The second wine in the middle is called Bay Bridge Merlot which also does not have a vintage on it because it cost me 2.99 (what a steal), and I did not expect this to taste very good either because of that. The third wine on the right is called California Dream Cabernet Sauvignon which actually had a vintage on it (2021) and cost me around $11; I expected this one to taste better than the other two wines. These are all wines that I have never had before so I really didn't have many expectations.

For the three types of cheeses that I got from Kroger, I have never tried these specific ones before so I was pretty excited to try these. The first cheese on the left (or the top) is Vermont Cheddar; nothing too special about this one. The second cheese in the middle is Boar's Head Chipotle Gouda which I was most excited about out of the three; I really like spicy food so this was perfect. The third cheese on the right (or the bottom) is Boar's Head Cream Havarti. This was probably the second most exciting cheese that I bought because I really enjoy creamy cheese.

I cut the three different types of cheese into little cubes although, from the looks of it, I did not do a very good job LOL. They are kind of mixed in together but the one that looks like it has peppers in it is the Gouda, the one that is a darker yellow is the Havarti, and the lightest one is the Vermont Cheddar. The Gouda was a little spicy, not as much as I expected, but I still really enjoyed it; it was a little creamy which I also enjoyed, but it had a smokey flavor to it which I was not a huge fan of. It also smelled very smokey and was a little chewy. The Havarti was not spicy at all, although, I did not expect it to be, it was very creamy (the creamiest out of the three), and had a sharp taste to it. It was actually very soft and did not smell like much. The Vermont Cheddar was definitely the sharpest out of the three cheeses which honestly I did not mind at all. It also was not spicy at all and it was not super creamy like I thought it would be.

The Bay Bridge Merlot smelled like dark cherry, with hints of floralness, and definitely smelled very sweet. It tasted super bitter, with very small hints of sweetness, as well as hints of cherry. With the Gouda, the bitterness of the wine took over at the beginning; it did not pair well with the wine at all, and then all I tasted was the spice from the cheese which was very overpowering. With the Havarti, the bitterness of the wine was just present the entire time, so I really did not taste much of the cheese and did not pair well together at all. I thought it would be better. With the cheddar, the bitterness of the wine was not as present as the other two kinds of cheese were, but I mostly just tasted the cheese. The wine was not overpowering with this cheese.

The Bay Bridge Red Blend smelled like dark cherry, had subtle hints of floralness, and smelled a little bit dry. It tasted super sweet just like it smelled, and tasted like apples and cherries (not really a fan of apples but liked the cherry flavor). With Gouda, the sweetness of the wine took over so I did not really taste the cheese until the end where then it just tasted spicy; it worked surprisingly well together. With the Havarti, the sweetness of the wine and the creaminess of the cheese really complemented each other well. It had a very good balance, and neither the cheese nor the wine was more overpowering than the other. With the cheddar, it was not terrible, but the wine and the cheese really did not complement each other well at all. I just tasted the cheese throughout the combo and it was weird since the wine is super sweet.

The California Dream Cabernet Sauvignon smelled like black raspberries, cherry, and subtle hints of dryness. It definitely tasted a little dry, it was very bitter, and I did get a strong taste of black raspberries from it. Honestly this one made me want to throw up even though I tried all combinations, but they all had the same characteristics. All the three types of cheese got overpowered by the overwhelming bitterness of the wine. None of the combinations even remotely made sense and did not complement each other well at all. I did not want anything to do with these to be honest LOL.

Overall, the evening was definitely interesting. I would not recommend these wines and I will definitely try to find better wines that are more than $2.99. But, it was fun and the three types of cheeses actually were really good.

Personal Review: When I first looked at it, it was a little more yellow than I was expecting from this white wine; it looked more clear in the bottle. It smelled pretty sweet, I specifically pointed out a banana-like aroma from this wine. It tasted like apples and peaches to me and did not taste like bananas funnily enough. It was also a little dry which I could not pick up when I initially smelled this wine. Overall, this wine was not the best, but it also wasn't chilled so next time hopefully it is better when chilled.
